Colorado is covered in haze this weekend. It’s a mix of smoke form fires in California, and local fires burning near Grand Junction. The other night I went out to photograph the sunset, expecting some interesting red light. The haze was so thick, the sun could barely even penetrate it.

The plant in this photo is really cool. It’s called Elkweed. It only pops up every few years, and when it does, it gets to 6 feet tall. It lives in huge clusters that will take over a hill side. There are many old wives tales about it, like when it blooms, a good snow year is on the way. I finally decided look up the facts. Here’s what I came up with.

Here’s another Elkweed with more flowers.

Here’s a close up of the flower. It appears that it has some kind of special relationship with these ants.

I thought I had a special relationship with this deer, but he ran away when I pulled out my camera.

Beautiful photos, Al. Interesting info on the elkweed. Would love to see a hillside full of them at flowering.
